Major business win for Alcolock GBs Swedish sister company

Foxguard Ab, the Swedish sister company to Cambridge based Alcolock GB today announced a major business win, by winning the tender to supply alcolocks to the Swedish Regional Government Department (West Region) in Goteborg.

Foxguards Managing Director, Marcus Thuresson, went on to say “this is fantastic news for not only our business but for everyone associated with the Alcolock 500 throughout Europe. The municipality have invested in 1500 alcolocks and chose our system predominantly on the back of the features it has, it’s proven track record and the fact that it is wireless enabling the vehicle operators to take the breathalyser inside at night”

Lennart Blank, Chairman of the West Region Municipality explained “We only have 1.5million people living in this region of Sweden but we average 20 deaths a year and 200 serious injuries through the effects of drink driving. We worked that out the medical costs associated with this, works out to £1.5m/year making an estimated total bill of £57m.

On the basis of this, not to mention the personal tragedy involved, we felt it worth while to invest in Alcolocks in our 1500 vehicles. We lease the vehicles for 3 years after which they are sold on to private customers and we will be leaving the Alcolocks in the vehicles once sold on to increase there use.

Drink driving is problem throughout Europe and we believe that this is the most effective way of dealing with it and preventing drink driving in the future”

The Alcolock combines a breathalyser identical to those supplied to the police but linked to an immobiliser fitted discreetly within the vehicle. The driver must give a breath sample under the legal limit (0.35mg per 100ml of breath) in order to start the vehicle. If the sample is above the limit the vehicle stays immobilised until another under the limit sample is given.

Alcolocks have been in use for some time as part of drink drive rehabilitation programmes in countries such as Canada, America and Australia. In Europe, the Swedish government is leading the way by establishing legislation for all vehicles to be fitted with an Alcolock by 2012, with buses and lorries having them by 2010.

Ends: 5th April 2007
